How to manage Microsoft Entra security group membership

Security groups often control who can use particular systems or resources. Even a small membership change may grant or remove access, so check the purpose of the group before editing it.

Why security-group changes matter

A security group may be linked to app assignments, SharePoint access, device policies or other permission rules. Do not treat it as a simple email list.

Safer membership workflow

  1. Identify the group by its full name and, where possible, object ID.
  2. Understand what the group controls and whether membership is dynamic or directory-synchronised.
  3. Confirm the user and obtain authorisation for the change.
  4. Add or remove the user using the appropriate Entra administrative experience.
  5. Verify membership and test the affected access if practical.

PowerShell consideration

Microsoft Graph PowerShell provides group-membership commands, but these require the appropriate Graph permissions. For example, Get-MgGroupMember can list members once you have an authorised connection. Avoid editing dynamic group memberships directly.

Where TenantPilot fits
