Distribution list or Microsoft 365 group?
An Exchange distribution group is primarily for email distribution. A Microsoft 365 group can also provide shared resources such as a group mailbox, calendar and SharePoint site. Their membership management is not interchangeable.
Make a membership change
- Find the exact distribution group and verify the address.
- Confirm whether the recipient should be included or removed.
- Check whether membership is managed in cloud Exchange or a synchronised on-premises directory.
- Make the approved change and verify the resulting membership.
PowerShell example
Add-DistributionGroupMember -Identity "[email protected]" -Member "[email protected]"
Get-DistributionGroupMember -Identity "[email protected]"Use the matching remove command only after checking approval and avoiding unintended disruption.
